Chase Reworks Sapphire Preferred and Hyatt Transfers — The New Math

3x gas, a bigger hotel credit, and a 4:3 Hyatt shift change how points add up

A refresh that actually changes behavior

On June 15, Chase rolled out a meaningful update to Sapphire Preferred: richer earn on everyday spending and beefed-up travel perks—while quietly setting a date for a transfer shake-up that matters if you love Hyatt. The headline sounds positive. The fine print is where your strategy changes.

What exactly changed—and why it matters now

Chase added 3x on gas and EV charging and 3x on vacation home platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo, kept 5x on travel booked through Chase Travel, and doubled the annual Chase Travel Hotel Credit to $100. There’s also a credit up to $120 for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or NEXUS every four years, and an expanded suite of travel protections including Emergency Evacuation coverage up to $100,000. For a card that still charges $95 a year, that’s a real value bump. Chase is also dangling a limited‑time 100,000‑point welcome offer after $5,000 in three months. But there’s a tradeoff: Ultimate Rewards will no longer move to World of Hyatt at 1:1 for everyone. For Sapphire Preferred applicants on or after June 15, the Hyatt transfer rate is already 4:3; for existing cardholders who applied before June 15, that 4:3 rate kicks in October 1, 2026. If you’re sitting on a stash and eyeing Park Hyatt or Alila redemptions, the clock is real. ([media.chase.com](https://media.chase.com/news/Meet-the-New-Chase-Sapphire-Preferred))

Meanwhile, American Express used its Gold Card’s 60th anniversary to sweeten hotel earnings—5x on prepaid hotels booked through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel app—plus new Hertz Five Star status and an updated $120 Dining Credit, with the annual fee unchanged at $325. That creates a clear fork: book via a portal for elevated earn, or transfer points to partners when the ratios still make sense. The new redemption math, in plain English

A practical two‑move plan for September

1) If you’re an existing Sapphire Preferred cardholder from before June 15 and you value Hyatt redemptions, map any 2026–2027 stays now and transfer what you’ll truly use before October 1. This preserves 1:1 where it matters most—high‑value Category 6–8 nights or off‑peak sweet spots you already intend to book. 2) For new applicants (or anyone who prefers simplicity), lean into Chase Travel bookings for 5x earn and the $100 annual hotel credit. Treat transfers as a bonus lever when the numbers beat portal pricing—especially on airlines where 1:1 remains intact. Use the complimentary Apple TV year by December 31, 2026, but don’t let it drive the decision; the core value is still points and protections. Should you apply for a card right now?

Where SuperPay fits—so you don’t need a spreadsheet

This update rewards people who can toggle between portal bookings and transfers. SuperPay’s Smart Card Picker makes that automatic by telling you which card to use at gas stations, on Airbnb stays, or when a Chase Travel hotel is better than a transfer. Walk into a station or open the Airbnb app and get a real‑time notification with the best card for the swipe.
